If you celebrate Halloween, why not make this front facing arrangement? Position it on a window sill to welcome trick or treaters. If Halloween isn't for you, you could make the arrangement but choose a colour scheme to suit your home.

A front facing spooky display for you to make.

How to make a front facing spooky display

What you need:

  • A container of your choice. I used a narrow tray approx 23cm x 10.5cm x 8cm but yours can be bigger or smaller.
  • 2 blocks of floral foam or an alternative such as agra wool brick.
  • Pot tape
  • 5 roses or a similar flower such as dahlias, carnations, chrysanthemums.
  • Moss to cover the foam/wool. Or foliage from the garden such as pittosporum, tree ivy, box, eunonymous.
  • Approx 10 seedheads or a smaller flower such as spray carnations, spray roses, lisianthus. You could forage for seedheads but check your local councils policy on foraging beforehand.
  • 3 small sprays of rosehips and 3 sprays of honesty seedheads You could use artificial. Or gyp, waxflower, skimmea flowers.
  • 3 verbena stems

How to make the arrangement.

Soak the 2 blocks of oasis or agar wool by placing it in a full sink of cold water. Let the foam take up the water rather than submerging it in the water. This takes about 60 seconds, don't over soak as the foam can disintegrate.

Chamfer all four edges of the foam to create a larger surface area, see photo below.

Two blocks of oasis with chamfered top edges.

Secure the oasis in situ with pot tape. Stick the pot tape under the container then over the oasis and back under the container to the same point you started. Repeat again so you have both blocks taped.

Now cover the foam with either the moss or short stems of foliage. If using moss secure it in place with German pins or you could use a short length of floristry wire bent over in half.

Insert a German pin to secure the moss in place.
This is how the mossed foam will look like.

Now start placing the seed heads using the taller ones at the back of the arrangement.

Fern and seed heads placed at the back of the arrangement creating height, movement.

Next insert the roses at varying heights in the display. Its visually pleasing to place them at different angles throughout so that they all don't face forward.

Building up different heights, angles and textures.

Continue placing all of the other flowers and foliage throughout the display making sure the colour is evenly placed.

Mist the display to aid longevity and trickle water on to the foam if required so the arrangement doesn't dry out.

Have a boo - tiful Halloween!

Place away from heat and direct sunlight and unlike me don't place it on a fire! (for photo only).
